This class will focus on developing students’ ability to dissect a variety of specimens safely with attention to detail and understanding of the organism. Emphasis will be placed on seeing the specimens as God’s creatures to be treated with respect. We will begin the semester with a lesson about safety as it pertains to tools and chemicals that we will be working with all semester. From then on we will dissect every other week or every two weeks depending on the difficulty level of the dissection. Week one will be learning about the organism’s anatomy and physiology. Week one will usually include a hands-on science activity relevant to the organism of interest. Week two will be the dissection week. If there is a third week it will be either an extension of the dissection or a conclusion to the dissection to concrete understanding. The dissections will include an earthworm, grasshopper, crawdad, starfish, lamprey, bony fish, shark, frog, mouse, sheep brain and cow eye. We may switch a few of these or even leave one out depending on the progression of the class during the course of the semester.
